# Overview

StackAI tools perform specific tasks within an agent or workflow: search for information, process documents, create files, or take an action. Use this catalog to choose an operation and understand its inputs, results, and limits.

## Choose a tool for your task

| Task                                                            | Tools to explore                                                                       |

## Use a tool in an agent or workflow

In an agent, attach the tools it can choose from and describe when it should use each one. In a workflow, add the action to the processing sequence and connect its required input values. A tool's output can become input for a later step; adding the tool alone does not display its result to a user.

Follow [Give an agent tools](/guides-and-quickstarts/agent-builder-and-skills/give-an-agent-tools.md) or [Configure and test an action](/guides-and-quickstarts/using-tools-and-actions/configure-and-test-an-action.md) for the full setup procedure. Each tool page explains what to supply and how to check the returned result.

## Availability and access

Use the tool name shown in your picker. Available tools depend on your deployment and organization settings. StackAI Computer tools require that capability to be available. Interactive tools can also require a chat session; they are not interchangeable with background or API operations.

For a third-party service's credentials, permissions, and provider-specific actions, use the [Provider Catalog](/integrations/catalog.md).

## Maintain an older workflow

[Legacy Tools and Migration](/stackai-tools/legacy-tools-and-migration.md) identifies deprecated tools and explains the available alternatives. Tools no longer offered in the picker are not recommendations for new workflows. Check input mappings, returned fields, and user-visible behavior when replacing an existing tool.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.stackai.com/stackai-tools/overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
